Sustainable Water Treatment and Nutrient Reuse Options

Uelzen and Braunschweig from 2nd-3rd of June 2015: three partners from SuWaNu project (Hydroair, AGAPA and AVBS) joined the staff exchange of the initiative; travelling to Germany to exchange knowledge. The visit included test fields of the professional association (Fachverband) and their field irrigation, the wastewater storage ponds at sugar factory Uelzen, usage of wastewater at a forest site and the site visit and a presentation of the „Braunschweiger Modell“. All upcoming questions were extensively discussed within the group.

Between the 19th and 22nd of May, the partners from SuWaNu project joined one of the most interesting activities of this initiative, travelling across different places in Andalusia. The main goal of this journey was showing organizations from other countries about relevant experiences on wastewater reuse in our region.

The objective of the project is to develop new technology that recovers phosphorus in wastewater treatment while improving the performance of biological nutrient removal process and operation of the processes involved in the treatment of sludge, specifically through a study of the parameters that influence the struvite crystallization process both at different points of the current treatment of the Cidacos WWTP (Calahorra) and at controlled manner in a separated reactor.

Water shortages affect many European regions, especially in the South, and raise the need to find innovative solutions which require a more efficient water management. Furthermore, agriculture is the most water consuming sector and therefore any measure to optimize the use of water should consider it. One of the most potential solutions is the reuse of wastewater in agriculture. This workshop aims to discuss the situation of the water reuse, the opportunities of this alternative resource and the conditions in which it can be used. The workshop will count with the participation of companies, public bodies and research institutions to share with us their experience and knowledge on the subject and try to bring solutions and success stories in which water reuse is already running.
